March is all going to be about collaborations and fashion events since it's already Summer in Bangkok, Thailand! Ha, this is why I love being in Asia due to its lovely weather, great food and generosity of people. However, I'll get my feet back to UK around August/ Septemberish, so I'd better live my life to the utmost here.
A few weeks ago, I received this must-have top from NUN Bangkok, Thai designer with a passion in street wear clothing line. Personally, I've known the designer of the brand for a while, so we had decided to launch a project together by creating this collaboration in order to push forward "Street" fashion to be more distinguished in online media. It's a great teamwork not just because we are attracted to each other but also me and the designer have something very in common. Therefore, it's super easy to work with her :)
In this outfit, I paired NUN Bangkok top with Missguided skirt and the jacket purchased from H&M.
1. Tell me a bit background of Nün Bangkok, and the designer itself?
Nün Bangkok was founded by myself, Nün Visitsak and my boyfriend Tom Shigeru Stannard. We met whilst I was studying in London where street fashion strives and everywhere you look, there is a clear sense of style and individuality. After we wrapped up our degrees, Tom moved with me to Bangkok, Thailand where we now reside but our love for street fashion and its charms never left us.
Thailand's fashion scene is extremely different from the London fashion scene in a sense where feminine clothes dominate the streets, malls and workplace. As I have never really been a girly-girl, I sometimes feel a tad out of place in such a feminine world and shopping in Thailand for me is not easy as frilly dresses are not my first choice!
After soul-searching for a couple of years and working in the film industry as a television commercial director, I decided that my true-calling is fashion and that I could never be truly happy if I don't take that risk and jump right into it. I spoke with Tom about doing our own fashion line and he was ecstatic. We agreed that street fashion would be our take on this fashion line, bringing the London street fashion vibes to our designs, incorporated with a splash of femininity. From there on, it was decided. I quit directing right away and we got the ball rolling for Nün Bangkok!
2. What is the style of Nün Bangkok?
In the simplest terms, Nün Bangkok is minimalistic street fashion. But to look closer into the style of Nün Bangkok you'll see fun touches of femininity juxtaposed with tom-boy elements. Also, at Nün Bangkok, we are not afraid to show some skin! This is not about being revealing, but it's about being proud of who you are no matter what size you are! It's about being comfortable in your own skin, showing off your confidence and really owning your own style!
3. Who're the targeted customers of Nün Bangkok?
Our target audience are people all around the world who loves to shop online to find interesting different design pieces from different parts of the world! They could either be fashionistas in their full-bloom, looking to add to their wardrobe with our statement pieces or they could be newbie fashionistas who are looking to explore and expand their own style with our more muted yet fun pieces!
4. What's your inspiration for this collection?
Initially, we wanted to create an edgy, 'tough-girl-chic' collection that focuses on light fabrics that is comfortable to wear. So we decided to tackle one of my favourite pieces in fashion, the leather motorbike jacket. Because I live in Thailand, the weather here has never allowed for me to be able to wear leather jackets, so we decided to create a 'non-leather, leather jacket'. This piece of ours looks like a motorbike jacket, but extremely airy and light. The body is made of linen, lined with silk, and the sleeves are made of see-through Italian silk mesh, making this piece very breathable! But in colder countries, this piece is perfect as a layering piece!
From that, we decided to make our very first collection in the theme of 'biker chic'. We spent weeks researching and trying to find a different take on the 'biker' theme. Then we found an image of the motorbike engines and thought that it looked very interesting and intricate. We decided we wanted to base the entire collection on the design of the motorbike engine. Our centerpieces of this collection is our 'Engine Dress' and our 'Engine Top'. The slanted lines on these two pieces are inspired by the motorbike engines, and other than making them very unique pieces, the slanted lines also compliments one's figure by elongating one's body and slimming down one's waistline. From there, we decided to make these slanted panels the main theme of this collection, now seen in our 'Lane Splitter Leggings', 'Lane Splitter Bomber' and the 'Burn Out Dress'.
5. How do you plan for the future growth of the brand?
Right now most of our customers are from the United States and the United Kingdom and in the future, we hope to attract more attention from the Asian market and hopefully open a store front at some point!
